Galileo once said that ‘The greatest wonder we have ever created is the written word because it speaks across time and space.’ I fear that this wonder of writing and its purpose is being lost. I fear that too much writing in primary school consists of stock sentences and phrases that lack imagination simply to pass certain narrow criteria. I wonder how often students are allowed to really think about their own ideas and express them. Hope often are they allowed to experiment with being a writer? Do they understand the value of playfulness with the written word? Are they encouraged to be logophiles?

In my experience, when people understand the true nature and wonder of the written word they are less fearful of it. They become inspired and want to write. They are happy to make mistakes and ultimately improve. The rules of writing, that may have been a mystery to them, begin to make sense. There is a shift in perspective. To write you need to be inspired.

The writing classroom should be a place of hope and possibility. A place of passion and enthusiasm. We need to remind students that writing is a wondrous thing. It is worthwhile and essential. It is fundamentally good for you.
We must work towards a classroom where, when writing is mentioned, there is not a collective sigh but an excited shuffling in the seats and an enthusiasm to get started. There is no fear of the blank page.
